From interaction design to functioning website

Västarvet is Sweden's largest foundation for natural and cultural heritage. On their search-engine-based website you can search among large quantities of information, among hundreds of thousands photographs and objects in the collections of a number of different museums. Precio Fishbone developed the website from a predefined interaction design. “The major challenge was in integrating the website with all the information in the underlying systems,” explains Henrik Staberg, project manager at Precio Fishbone.

Västarvet is a part of Region Västra Götaland and their duty is to preserve western Sweden's natural and cultural heritage. They carry out future-oriented development throughout Västra Götaland.

“

We try to bring history to life with exciting museums, visitor destinations and exhibits,” explains web coordinator Barbro Lindh. “As a regional resource we focus on the cultural environment, nature conservation, archeology, preservation and handicrafts.”

Navigation is entirely search based

When Precio Fishbone received the assignment for developing Västarvet's website, the project was already well advanced.“Requirement specifications, interaction design and graphic design were already completed,” says Henrik Staberg. “Our job was to translate and develop this into a functioning website. Because the site is search-engine based, Precio Fishbone collaborated with Findwise, a company that specializes in search-driven ‘findability’.“There is no hierarchy for the site,” says Henrik. “Navigation is entirely search based and the visitors create the hierarchy through their searches and filtering of search results.”

Each organization has its own website

And there is a lot of information to search through. Västarvet has operations at several museums: Bohusläns museum, Göteborgs Naturhistoriska museum, Lödöse museum, Forsviks Bruk, Slöjd & Byggnadsvård, Vänersborgs museum, Vitlycke museum and Västergötlands museum.“Each organization has its own website that is structured with the same templates but with content that is specific for each organization,” Henrik explains.

Västarvet can independently create new websites

There are actually several websites and the solution is built so that Västarvet can even create new websites as needed without outside assistance.“The major challenge was in integrating the website with all the information in the underlying systems,” explains Henrik and mentions Basetool, among others. “Basetool is a common platform for companies and organizations in the tourist industry, a web tool that facilitates collaboration between destinations and various stakeholders and organizations.“When Västarvet's editors write and create pages with content that is not in Basetool or some other system, EPiServer is the CMS.”

“Precio Fishbone is easy to work with”

The website was launched in the summer of 2013 and Västarvet has been very pleased.“The project has gone smoothly,” says Barbro Lindh. “Precio Fishbone is easy to work with and has skilled personnel.”“After a launch you always notice things that could be even better,” Hendrik Staberg adds. “So the project is continuing and we are constantly enhancing the site.”
